The Practice of Reduction
My work is an ongoing dialogue between the permanence of the grid and the fallibility of the human hand. By stripping away narrative and ornament, I seek to uncover the skeletal truth of a composition.
Biography
Born in Aarhus and currently based in Copenhagen, Elin Marstrand received her MFA from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Her work has been described as 'structural minimalism,' characterized by a rigorous commitment to form and a limited palette.
In her Copenhagen studio, she employs a technique of additive and subtractive layering, often spending months on a single canvas to achieve the desired depth of surface. Her influences range from the Brutalist architecture of the 1960s to the precise typography of the Swiss Style.
